Derrick Freeman was born July 23, 1990 in Knoxville, TN. At the age of two he stopped talking and was diagnosed with autism, a state of mind challenged by daydreams, delusions, hallucinations and disregard of external reality. By age three he began to write and draw pictures. Unable to learn and use language like most children he learned to express his perceptions of life and everyday living through his drawings and artwork. Derrick, a prolific and talented artist has been featured in local newspapers and televisions shows. He designed the 2007 Christmas Cards for the Autism Society of East Tennessee and has been featured in many publications. For more about Derrick CLICK HERE

There will be four art exhibits showcasing amazing workshops.  The Souper Bowl exhibit will be there in which students from the Tennessee School for the Blind created bowls that were on exhibit at Mid-South Ceramics and donations to the bowls helped feed individuals through the Nashville Rescue Mission. Footprints will be exhibited in which shoes created by young people with a variety of disabilities will be given to children in need in the Appalachian region.  The Out of Africa exhibit will feature art from children in Sweetwater TN., Derrick Freeman from Knoxville TN and. Johannesburg South Africa which will be exchanged between the two countries after this event.  Of course the Costuming Workshop in which young people have been working at MTSU to create super hero costumes from concept to creation.
