Derrick's art sings with splashes of color, confident strokes and compositions that evokes a wide range of emotions. Besides art, Derrick's other hobbies include horseback riding and swimming. But of utmost importance is that Derrick's art represents the gift that God has blessed him with. To God Be The Glory, through Eyes of Faith All Things Really Are Possible.

Derreck received The Temple Grandin Award-It's the World's leader in resources on Autism. The award named after Dr. Temple Grandin who has Autism. Derrick received the award for outstanding contributions to family, community and self. Derrick also held the first Wilbur N. Daniel African American art show at Austin Peay University. The Arc of the Mid South presented its 14th Annual Arc Benefit Gala" Strengthening the Community through Families and Partners" in 2009. Each year at the Gala awards and honors are bestowed upon individuals, groups, organizations, and businesses who have given their utmost to the disability community. Derrick was awarded and honored by the Arc "The Outstanding Artist/Performer Award".
